About the Artist
Jeff Mentuck began blowing glass over 20 years ago while a student at Franklin Pierce College. He worked for and studied under many of todays great glassblowers before opening his own studio, Marblehead Glassworks, in 2000. At the Glassworks, Mentuck produces high quality handmade studio artglass that has been shown in galleries through the US and can be found in collections worldwide.
In recent years Mentuck has been working in the glassblowing studio at Salem State College and has backed away from wholesale production oriented work. Time spent with students is balanced with more artistic pursuits including art glass marbles, solid sculpture, and paperweights to complement his blown work.
Artist’s Statement
I have always had an interest in science, art, and fiery danger. I think that’s why I was drawn to glassblowing. The glassblowing studio is like an applied physics laboratory that focus’ on the forces of heat, gravity, and perserverance. Despite the dramatic flames and physical effort, the most important part of the process is DESIGN.
The focus of my work may change, but my design sense constantly strives to balance elements of form, color and composition in a way that remains both contemporary and classic. Each shape and design is refined over dozens of repititions and evolves to meet its potential.
